CLIL

CLIL stands for Content and Language Integrated Learning. Put simply, it is an approach to language learning based on the idea that students learn a language more effectively if they study subjects from the standard curriculum in the target language. For English language students this could involve studying history, geography, IT or science in English.

The idea is that students are more motivated to learn if there are real objectives; they are using language to learn. Another important benefit of CLIL is that students will be able to develop multi-cultural awareness. CLIL can also help to develop study skills and is useful for those who may study or work in an English speaking environment.

In Italy from 2010 CLIL is obligatory in the 5th level of secondary school. There are moves to introduce CLIL in Spain, Germany and France. We can expect many other countries, in Europe and around the world to follow Italy’s example.

At Scarborough International School we are one of the first English language schools in the UK to have developed partnerships with local schools, both public and private, which will give our students the chance to experience lessons in an English school as taught to English students. Cheswold Hall

Cheswold Hall is home to our year round courses, catering for adult learners and closed groups of younger learners during the low season.

The school is fully resourced with all the latest teaching materials and technology including Interactive Whiteboards.

The Self-Access Centre is available to all students when working independently, it is fully resourced with laptops which have English Language software installed.

Cheswold Hall has WI-FI, which allows students to access the internet on any of the school’s laptops or using their own.

Meet the Staff - John Mckenzie

John Mckenzie is the Director of Studies at Scarborough International School of English. With over 25 years of experience in EFL John has worked in Germany, Switzerland, Russia, Lithuania and Poland. John was formerly a Director of Studies at Fee Sprachreisen in Brighton, Director of Training at Frances King School of English in London and Director of American English School, a Polish based chain of schools with branches across Central and Eastern Europe.

Following the successful British Council inspection last summer John will oversee the introduction of new courses, including CLIL and project based summer programmes at Scarborough International School of English. John has many years experience as a teacher trainer and will be busy in 2011 arranging new programmes for trainee teachers of English.

Here’s a fun way to expand your vocabulary.

Enter Google Sets in your search engine.

When it comes up enter two or more connected words in the top two or three boxes.

Click on either small set or large set.

You will see a list of connected words. For example if you enter fork and knife you will get words like spoon, tablespoon, plate etc.

If there are any words you don’t know click on them and then click on images to see what they are.

This is a fantastic way of building up word sets and it’s great fun!
